The 2026 inflection point. Two films — Dhurandhar 2 and Bhooth Bangla — carried 70%+ of April's Hindi box office. Mid-budget Hindi cinema collapsed (Ginny Wedss Sunny 2: ₹1.57 Cr in 5 days). Malayalam led the language share for the first time in any modern month. The pattern is clear: capital is concentrating in mega-studios while mid-tier production is being squeezed out. The studios profiled below are the survivors — or the new entrants positioned to benefit.
Methodology: Cumulative gross figures are Boxoffy estimates based on lifetime worldwide grosses of major productions per studio, sourced from BCM-12 (Sacnilk, Box Office India, Pinkvilla, Bollywood Hungama, Variety, Deadline, Comscore, Exhibitor Relations, Box Office Guru, Boxoffice Pro, Venky_BO, Funasia). Exact studio-level cumulatives are not publicly disclosed; rankings reflect Boxoffy's verified film-level rollups. Tap any card for the full studio profile.

Language Malayalam · Mollywood 3 STUDIOS
Malayalam cinema is having its biggest commercial year ever. April 2026 saw Mollywood lead the all-India language share at 32.8% — a first. Wayfarer + Anto Joseph FC join the list after Patriot's Mammootty + Mohanlal reunion delivered the 2nd biggest Mollywood opener ever.
Language Kannada · Sandalwood 1 STUDIO
Hombale Films is Kannada cinema's only world-class studio — but they punch so far above their weight, they effectively run two of the biggest Indian franchises. Salaar Part 2 releases Nov 14, 2026.
Specialty Distribution & Strategic 2 PARTNERS
Two distribution partners worth profiling separately. Funasia handles overseas (US/Canada) for nearly every Indian film — including D2, BB, Patriot. Sikhya was just acquired by Jio Studios for ₹150 Cr.
Boxoffy Intelligence · The 2026-27 Slate Map
The Three Studios That Will Define the Next 12 Months
Jio + B62 (D2 success continuation): Sets the bar at ₹1,801 Cr. Maatrubhumi (Aug 14) is the first test of whether Jio can repeat without B62 directing. Toxic (Yash, Jun 4) tests Yash post-KGF. The franchise of franchises.
Red Chillies + Marflix (King): Dec 24, 2026 is the year's defining single release. SRK + Suhana on screen. Anand directing. ₹300+ Cr budget. King's success or failure cements the SRK era thesis.
Hombale + Sun Pictures: Salaar 2 (Nov 14) and Coolie (Aug 14) + Jana Nayagan (Diwali) make South cinema's H2 arguably bigger than Hindi's. Three pan-India tentpoles in 90 days, all with massive budgets.
Boxoffy Intelligence · Mid-Tier Squeeze
The ₹50-150 Cr Budget Gap Is Becoming Unviable
April 2026's data is brutal: Hindi cinema delivered a 2.2% success rate. Films with budgets between ₹50 Cr and ₹150 Cr are dying — too expensive to recoup from streaming-only deals, too small to compete for theatrical screens against ₹300 Cr+ tentpoles. Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 (₹1.57 Cr in 5 days) and Ek Din are the latest casualties.
The studios surviving this squeeze fall into three buckets: (1) Mega-budget producers (Jio, Lyca, Hombale); (2) franchise-led producers (Maddock, Marflix, B62); (3) low-budget actor-producers (Sivakarthikeyan's Passion, Cape of Good Films). The ₹100 Cr budget producer with no franchise has no obvious path forward.
Boxoffy Intelligence · The Capital Wave
₹2,500+ Cr Has Entered Indian Studios in 18 Months
The capital flows are unprecedented for Indian cinema:
· Adar Poonawalla → Dharma: ₹1,000 Cr for 50% (Oct 2024)
· Universal Music → Excel: ₹720 Cr for 30% (Jan 2026)
· Saregama → Bhansali: ₹325 Cr for 28% (Dec 2025)
· Jio Studios → Sikhya acquisition: ₹150 Cr (Feb 2026)
· Roy Kapur ongoing $50M raise: ~₹180 Cr (~$22M committed)
Total: ~₹2,500 Cr across major Hindi production houses in 18 months. Largest single wave of strategic capital ever to enter Indian cinema. The transition from owner-operator studios to professionally-capitalized creative companies has begun.
